We offer our humble obeisance and blessings to all the wise souls who are waiting to join our platform and enjoy wisdom.
The topic we are going to talk about today is a continuation of last week. It is the complete emptiness of Mahanirvana. Let us get into the topic.
First, let us know what meditation is, and then we can enter this world of emptiness.
We know that meditation is an activity of concentrating the mind. But, that is not the truth. When the mind is concentrated, there must be an object; there must be a person who concentrates. This is a dual position. That is, the act of dividing something into two. No matter how many times one is divided, it must always remain one. That is meditation, penance. Is this possible? Think about it for a while.
But, when we meditate, is there anyone inside us? No, right? Similarly, there is no one outside. So, the act of concentrating is not needed there. There is no distinction or difference between the two states of inside and outside.
Whatever is inside flows into what is outside. There is no boundary there. Only if there is a boundary can we make the definitions of inside so far; outside so far. When there is no boundary, there is nothing inside; there is nothing outside. There is emptiness inside. There is emptiness outside. This is called meditation, penance.
We have heard many students tell us. Guru, when you do penance, you get tired. When the mind is focused, there will inevitably be fatigue. When you try to do something, isn’t your energy wasted there? When energy is wasted, when prana is lost, fatigue comes by itself and takes over you.
In meditation or penance, at some point, when the mind disappears at a certain point of illusion, emptiness suddenly appears and engulfs you. Then there will be no time, space, or space. We have all seen small whirlwinds in many places on Earth, haven’t we? Have you ever wondered what causes them? When that place becomes empty without air, the universe rushes in at a whirling speed to fill that void immediately.
Similarly, when there is no mind within you, then a void will begin to form within you. The energies of the void will begin to gather there to fill that void. Filled with voids, you will become a void. If there is emptiness, that void will automatically begin to fill with space. The magic that this creates is many, many billions. The reason is that in the void there is the real matter and the primordial truth, the universal Brahman. What do you need to tell me, dear ones, what will we become when this real matter and primordial truth fill us? Fill this space yourself.
Our service is to create a void, an emptiness within you. Then the open space will take care of you. For this you need the Guru’s grace, the Guru’s grace, the Guru’s mercy. It is not the Guru’s job to give knowledge; the Guru’s great job is to create a platform in you for that knowledge to come.
If you are overflowing when knowledge comes, even if God wants to, He cannot fill you completely. If you remain empty, the Guru can fill you completely. Should He fill you now? Should He not? Decide for yourself.
This steadiness can never be your natural quality. You should never get tired in meditation. Complete meditation will constantly replenish your energy, it will not cause loss. Tell me how fatigue comes when there is no loss. Meditation is, in its measure, rest.
You should not practice meditation or practice it. You should become meditation. You should not do penance. You should become penance. No one can do meditation or penance. It is always at rest in a vacuum, in the middle of nowhere. If you go there, you will immediately become an empty vessel. Only one can fill an empty vessel. If the vessel is already overflowing, there will be activities going on there. That is why we say, do not try to do meditation or penance. Remain meditative and penance. That is all.
There is a very simple way to do that. Meditation should happen; but you should not meditate.
You should do penance; but the ascetic should not be there.
You should walk; but you should not have legs.
You should think; but the mind should not be there to think.
You should fly and fly in the open field and enjoy; but you should not have wings.
If you understand the true meaning of these words, then only you are a wise man, a universal wise man.
You should do meditation. But you should disappear there. Then you will simply be life, life consciousness, life light. In the soul where life exists, there are no three times. The state of life is the state beyond times.
This is what the Zen masters said, if you remain quietly in the void without doing anything, spring will come and settle within you by itself. When spring comes, the grass will start growing by itself. That is why they said that the grass will grow by itself without anyone nurturing it. These grasses wither and die in the soil when summer comes. But, when spring begins, all the dead grasses grow on their own without anyone watering them. How is that? That is the philosophical principle of nature. We do not need to do anything for the grasses to grow. We just need to bring spring. Growth will happen on its own. This is what we all need to understand and live our lives.
When you allow life to take its own course,
when you do not want to implement it,
when you do not want to give any restrictions on it,
when you do not implement it skillfully,
when you do not force any restrictions on it,
an uncontrolled, self-existent state of pure reality will arise. Do you know what its name is? Its name is meditation.
That is why we say again and again that no one can do meditation. We can be in meditation. Concentrating the mind is something that can be done by man. But meditation can be a divine power that cannot be done by man. We should live in that perfect divinity, and we should not try to do or bring about that divinity.
A meditator never becomes a powerful person. He becomes peaceful. He is always immersed in peace.
But all these fights and disputes arise because of the formation of power within you. All powers are created by friction and resistance. Friction creates sparks and electricity. That is why people who seek power always fight. Struggle always creates power. When we refuse to accept the idea of someone, your idea starts clashing with his idea. So there is resistance. Opposite poles always look away from each other; they never come together. You can see this polar position very well in the magnetic senses. That is why this world is always fighting with each other to seize power, and creating forces by rubbing against each other. It is because power begins to rule the world that these fights and disputes continue to this day.
Meditation will keep you calm. There is also a power for peace. That power is a completely different, different dimension of power. It is a wonderful power that does not show any resistance. Resistances, fights and disputes always have the main forces of struggle. It is the male power. But the power of peace has the female power that can never be subdued. The male power can destroy; the female power can make us live in the pool of nectar. That is why even in the Brahmanical penance, we have been teaching and teaching that hot heat is impure heat and that is the solar power; cold heat is pure heat and that is the elixir of the cold moon. Therefore, the power of peace can be called the female power. They say that there is no opposition to female power, no violence.
Buddhas and sages are full of power. There is a deep peace in their peace. They are really like a lotus flower, like a rose flower. But they are not explosives. They are like the smile of a child. They are like the flame of a small lamp. Look at how much light that lamp gives in the darkness. That small light shows us another evolution. That power we can call divine power. There is no friction or resistance in it.
There is a lot of resistance in focusing the mind. We are clashing and rubbing against the mind itself. We are fighting with our own mind. You are making the mind suffer only to reach a specific goal and to reach a specific distance. You are somehow trying to concentrate the mind on one point. You are forcibly forcing your mind. Even if the mind runs away saying, “Sir, leave me alone,” you are dragging the mind that has run away with the rope of thought, saying, “How can you run away from me?” The mind is struggling to escape from you; it is suffering; it is beating with hunger. As the mind runs away, thousands and thousands of new thoughts keep appearing within you. You say, “I don’t know where all these thoughts come from, even if you just sit down to meditate.” Do you know the reason? You are the ones who are fighting with your mind. If one goes, four will surely come.
If you keep fighting with your mind, the mind will keep getting more and more powerful. The more powerful, the more thoughts will keep getting more and more. Then where is the concentration of the mind? All that is of no use, dear ones. Only when the mind is calm will thoughts not arise. You yourself have to keep your mind at peace.
Concentration of the mind will make you a determined person. Meditation will make you an empty vessel, a void, a void. This is called Prajna Paramita in Buddhism.
You cannot bring meditation. But you can keep yourself open for it to enter you. You do not need to do anything to bring it into this world. You cannot bring it. It is situated somewhere beyond you. If it is to come into you, you have to go beyond and disappear. If there is to be meditation, there should be no mind there. Meditation is the state of being without mind. Meditation is a flower of pure awareness. There is no inner thought or thought within it.
Meditation is a tree that grows without a seed. That is the wonderful magical meditation tree of the world. We need a seed to concentrate the mind. But the meditation tree does not need a seed. Because it is a seed that is always awake. We do not need to wake up the awake. But, don’t we want to bring the sleeping to the state of wakefulness. That is where the awakening of the seed is needed. If you sow the seed of wisdom within you, as it grows, the mind will completely disappear. A mindless person becomes wise. Only when you become a wise tree can you be a fertilizer, a seed, and a shadow for others. We lovingly invite everyone to come and sow yourselves as seeds in our shadow. That is all.
No inner intention has ever succeeded. No inner intention ever brings any blessing or greeting to anyone. Intentions always make promises. Things are never given. When one thought fails, another thought immediately enters. Things keep happening in our lives that are going to fail. So you keep getting deceived. When your inner desires keep deceiving you, one day suddenly you will become aware. That is, you will suddenly start seeing it within yourself. That is the beginning of meditation. Meditation does not have any seed in it. If you start meditating for something, then you will just start concentrating your mind.
Meditation is not being done. Then it means that you are still in this world. It means that your mind is still interested in trivial things. Even if you meditate to attain nirvana, you are still attached to worldly things. Even if you meditate to attain God, you are still attached to worldly things. But in meditation there is no goal; there is nothing like that.
Meditation is the insight that all the goals in the world are false. Desires will not even lead you to meditation. Meditation is an unintelligible understanding. Meditation is the knowing of the unknown. Go within yourself for a while and see what meditation is. I have not come to teach you anything in these talks. I have come simply to tell you to wake up.
The mind is always struggling to do things in strong and complex matters; it also has desires. Meditation is always at peace in deep silence. It does not react. It unites itself within itself, like a turtle.
Meditation is not something you do in the morning and then it is over. Meditation is something you live in every moment of your life. It should become a kind of change of seasons when you walk, sleep, sit, talk, listen to others. The man who is at rest is in it. A man who keeps on giving up the thoughts of the past is always in meditation. Never dare to act on already made decisions. All those decisions are wrong thoughts, desires, fears, and so on. The reason is that you are there.
You are your past. You are all your experiences of the past. Never allow the dead to rule over the living. Do not allow the past to rule over the present. That is meditation. In short, during meditation you are not there. Do not allow the dead to rule over your life. Meditation is the name for not allowing the dead to rule over the living.
Meditation is an ecstatic experience that gives you a completely different kind of pure feeling for living your life. Then you will simply live in self-awareness. When you live in that moment, when nothing interferes, your attention is complete. Because there is no distraction. The distraction comes from the past and the future. When attention is complete, the action is complete. It does not leave any residue. It goes on making you free. It never creates cages that confine you. It never imprisons you. That was the ultimate goal of the Buddha. That is what he called Nirvana.
‘Nirvana’ means liberation. It means complete, total, unhindered freedom.
It means that you become like a vast sky there.
There are no boundaries there. It is boundless; beyond boundaries.
It simply is.
Then there is nothingness around you, inside you, outside you.
Nothingness is the function of a meditative state of self-awareness.
Moreover, in that nothingness lies the blessing. That nothingness itself is a blessing. The name of that blessing is swimming in the completely empty stream of Maha Nirvana, and we conclude this talk with joy.
Again next week, on Thursday night, we will discuss how to swim completely in the river without anything. Please come.
